Measures To Support The Priority Project "Improvement Of The Volga" Were Discussed At A Meeting Chaired By Dmitry Medvedev

Today, August 8, during a working visit of Dmitry Medvedev to Volgograd, a meeting on the conservation, prevention of pollution and rational use of the Volga River was held. Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Alexander Morozov took part in the discussion.

Opening the meeting, the Prime Minister noted that the Volga is the most important transport component that connects many regions, transports more than half of all river passengers and cargoes, and a source of water and energy for cities and towns, industrial and agricultural enterprises.

About 45% of the country's industrial production, about 50% of the agricultural potential and more than 20% of the entire fishery are concentrated here -

He stressed.

Dmitry Medvedev drew attention to the fact that the most tense situation developed in the Volga basin: 38% of all Russian polluted run-offs enter the river's waters.

The reason is known: physical wear and technological backwardness of sewage treatment plants of industrial and municipal enterprises, their low efficiency. No less harm is caused by agricultural waste. In addition, the river is cluttered with sunken ships, -

Said Dmitry Medvedev and clarified that with sewage to the Volga receives more than 2.5 million tons of pollutants a year.

To address these problems, a new priority project for the purification and conservation of the Volga will be developed, aimed at creating environmental monitoring of the state of the environment, launching construction, upgrading the purification facilities of housing and communal services, introducing the best technologies for wastewater treatment at enterprises, Mandatory installation of modern automated control systems for waste water.

According to the head of the government, this work will require a systematic approach, coordinated efforts on the part of the federal center, all Volga regions and, of course, business.

We proceed from the fact that the construction and reconstruction in enterprises and housing and communal services will be implemented on the basis of the best available technologies, the so-called BAT, and in this regard we ask our colleagues from the Ministry of Industry and Trade to give priority to supporting local enterprises,

Said Sergei Donskoy.
